In Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, the Kamado family tragedy is the emotional spark that sets the entire story in motion. Tanjiro returns home to find his family slaughtered, Nezuko turned into a demon, and his father already gone. But this raises an unsettling question—what if Tanjuro Kamado had been alive when Muzan attacked?

This single change could have rewritten the fate of Tanjiro, Nezuko, and even Muzan himself.

1. If Tanjuro Had Gone Instead of Tanjiro

On that night, Tanjiro was away selling charcoal. But traditionally, that responsibility belonged to Tanjuro as the head of the family. If Tanjuro had gone instead, Tanjiro would have stayed home with his mother and siblings.

In such a scenario, Muzan would have faced no real resistance. Tanjiro, despite his kindness and resolve, had no training and no weapon capable of harming Muzan. The most likely outcome is brutal: the entire family would be wiped out in minutes.

However, there is one disturbing possibility—Tanjiro himself could have survived by being turned into a demon. Unlike ordinary humans, Tanjiro’s body and lineage are exceptional. As a demon, he may have eventually conquered sunlight and developed a will strong enough to resist Muzan’s control. A Sun-conquering demon driven by grief would be far more dangerous to Muzan than any Demon Slayer.

Ironically, Muzan’s greatest threat might have been created that very night.

2. If Muzan Had Faced Tanjuro Kamado Directly

The most fascinating scenario is Muzan encountering Tanjuro at home.

Although Tanjuro was physically ill, the series makes it very clear that his true strength was never ordinary. Even in a weakened state, he once killed a massive bear with a single, precise strike—calm, controlled, and effortless. That moment was not random; it was a deliberate hint.

Tanjuro possessed:

If Muzan had appeared before him, this would not have been a one-sided massacre. Muzan has always been cautious around Sun Breathing users. Seeing Tanjuro’s hanafuda earrings and feeling his aura alone could have triggered fear—something Muzan rarely experiences.

There are two realistic outcomes here:

Tanjuro may not have been able to kill Muzan—but he could have protected his family, even at the cost of his own life.

3. A Fully Trained Tanjuro Changes Everything

Now imagine a more extreme divergence: Tanjuro survives longer, remains healthy, and trains at full capacity.

At his peak, Tanjuro’s understanding of Sun Breathing was purer than even Tanjiro’s later mastery. He did not rely on strength or rage; he relied on precision, rhythm, and absolute calm. Combined with the Transparent World, this gives him a tactical edge Muzan has historically struggled against.

In this timeline, Muzan would be forced to abandon his passive manipulation and reveal his true demonic form far earlier. The balance of power would shift dramatically. With the right conditions, Tanjuro Kamado could have become the one human capable of ending Muzan’s existence before the Demon Slayer Corps even reached its peak.
